Heart Procedure Dilemma: Expert Insights on Why Surgery Still Saves Lives

CABG Surgery & Cardiac Care: Why Surgery Still Matters

By Dr. Sanjay Kumar, CTVS, Paras Hospital Gurgaon & Patna

In today’s medical world, many patients believe minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty or TAVR are always better. However, for complex heart diseases—especially in patients with diabetes, multiple blockages, or valve issues—cardiac surgery like CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) remains the gold standard.

Why CABG Still Leads:

  • Offers long-term survival benefits, especially in high-risk patients

  • Reduces chances of repeat procedures

  • Allows correction of multiple heart issues in one surgery

Valve & Aortic Surgeries Also Matter:
Valve repair/replacement surgeries are still the most durable solutions in younger patients. Similarly, open aortic aneurysm repair is often the only safe option in complex cases.

While catheter-based treatments are useful, they’re not always the best fit for everyone. Surgical options continue to offer better control, durability, and outcomes—especially when done early.

Final Word:
If you or a loved one is facing a decision between a stent or surgery, consult a cardiac surgeon. The best treatment is not always the newest—it’s the one that saves lives long term.
